High Stile features classic volcanic rock formations, predominantly basalt and andesite, offering a glimpse into the geological drama that shaped the Lake District millions of years ago.
From the summit, one can observe the stunning peaks of Red Pike, Haystacks, and the expansive Bassenthwaite Lake. A postcard view at every turn!
The name 'High Stile' is said to derive from the old English word 'stile', referring to a way over a fence or wall, suitable for sheep – a nod to its pastoral heritage.
High Stile has been a popular hiking destination for centuries, attracting walkers not just for its challenging climbs but also for its breathtaking vistas.
This classic circular route begins in the village of Buttermere and ascends via Red Pike. From Buttermere, head west along the lakeshore before ascending the steep but rewarding path up to Bleaberry Tarn. Continue up to Red Pike (755m), before following the ridge to High Stile (807m). Descend via High Crag and Scarth Gap Pass, returning to Buttermere along the lakeside path.
Starting at Gatesgarth Farm near the southern end of Buttermere, this route tackles the High Stile ridge directly. Ascend steeply to Scarth Gap Pass, then climb to High Crag (744m). Continue along the ridge to High Stile (807m), taking in the stunning views of Buttermere and Crummock Water. Descend via Red Pike and Bleaberry Tarn, looping back to the starting point.
This out-and-back route starts in Buttermere and follows Sourmilk Gill to Bleaberry Tarn. From the tarn, ascend steeply to Red Pike before continuing along the ridge to High Stile. Retrace your steps to return to Buttermere, enjoying the expansive views on the descent.
This adventurous route combines High Stile with Fleetwith Pike. Starting at Gatesgarth, ascend Fleetwith Edge to Fleetwith Pike (648m) for panoramic views. Descend to the valley before tackling the steep ascent to High Crag and continuing along the ridge to High Stile. Descend via Red Pike and Bleaberry Tarn, returning to Gatesgarth.
This less commonly walked route starts in Ennerdale at Bowness Knott car park. Follow the valley track and ascend via Scarth Gap Pass to High Crag. Continue along the ridge to High Stile, savouring views of Ennerdale Water and the surrounding fells. Retrace your steps back to Ennerdale.
There is parking available at the Buttermere village car park, which provides direct access to the trails leading to High Stile.
Local buses operate from Keswick to Buttermere, making it accessible for those without a vehicle.
Coffee shops and public toilets can be found in Buttermere village, whilst Keswick boasts a wider range of facilities including pubs, restaurants, and shops.
